What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves the use of a device with really fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures trigger the body’s natural healing process. This promotes the production of collagen and elastin. It results in improved skin texture, reduced scars and wrinkles, and overall skin rejuvenation.

The needles of the microneedling device can be of different sizes. The treatment can be adjusted to target your specific skin concerns and desired results.

What are the Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling offers several benefits that make it a popular choice for those seeking skin rejuvenation:

  • This treatment uses your body’s natural healing process to enhance your skin’s appearance without the need for chemicals or fillers.
  • Compared to more invasive procedures, microneedling typically involves minimal downtime.
  • Microneedling can address a wide range of skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation.
  • The procedure can help achieve thicker, tighter skin by using your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin.
  • Microneedling helps in hair growth for people with alopecia by stimulating the scalp and potentially helping with hair follicle renewal.
  • Microneedling creates micro-channels that boost the absorption of skincare products and maximize their effectiveness.
  • Microneedling helps shrink enlarged pores for a more smoother and refined appearance.

Areas Commonly Treated with Microneedling

  • Microneedling can be used on various parts of the body, including:

    • Face

To improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and diminish acne scars.

    • Neck and Décolleté

To address signs of aging and sun damage.

    • Hands

To rejuvenate the skin and reduce the appearance of veins and wrinkles.

    • Scalp

To promote hair growth and treat thinning hair.

    • Under the eyes

Helps tighten the skin so that the eyes appear brighter and to mitigate the look of under-eye puffiness and bags.

    • Beard

Stimulate collagen and keratin production to help improve beard hair growth by boosting nutrient-rich blood flow

    • Stretch Marks

Microneedling can help fade stretch marks by triggering your body to make new collagen, which plumps and smooths the skin. It can be performed on areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, and buttocks.

Microneedling Pre-Procedure Preparation

To begin your journey, schedule a consultation with our experienced surgeon, Dr. James Lacy. During your consultation, he will conduct a thorough examination of your eyelids and discuss your medical history. This evaluation will help determine if eyelid surgery is the right choice for you. You will also be asked to:

    • Quit smoking.
    • Adjust your current medications or start taking new ones.
    • Stop taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, blood thinners, multivitamins, and herbal supplements to reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising.

Additionally, arrange for a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from the surgery and stay with you the first night after the procedure.

Treatment Day Advice

  • Please come to the office without make-up, creams, gels, or lotions on treatment areas.
  • We will have you wash your face when you arrive at the practice.
  • A topical anesthetic will be applied to your skin, and you will numb for 45-60 minutes.
  • Do NOT take an antihistamine
  • Notify our cosmetic injector of any cosmetic tattoos to areas being treated.

Microneedling Procedure

First of all, our nurse injector at Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery carefully cleanses your skin to minimize any risk of infection. Following the cleansing, a topical anesthetic numbs the treatment area. In some cases, a local anesthetic injection might be used as an alternative. Once the numbing agent takes effect, the healthcare provider will use a handheld device with fine needles such as eDermaStamp, to create controlled micro-injuries in your skin. A solution like hyaluronic acid might be used during this step to further enhance the process.

The entire procedure is relatively quick, typically taking 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Once the microneedling is complete, a soothing solution may be applied to minimize any discomfort. The procedure concludes with a hydrating mask placed on your face to protect and nourish your skin.

After the microneedling session, it’s normal for your skin to appear slightly red and feel sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects typically subside within a few days. As your skin heals from the micro-injuries, it naturally produces more collagen and elastin. It’s important to note that while some microneedling devices use radiofrequency waves emitted through the needles for dramatic results, this is not always the case.

Microneedling Post-Procedure

After you have a microneedling procedure, some side effects are to be expected. When you leave your appointment, your skin may be flushed or bright red, resembling a mild to moderate sunburn. This redness typically fades within 48 hours and swelling may also occur and last up to 48 hours. Flaking and skin peeling are all considered to be common side effects after the procedure.

Other side effects, such as bumps, breakouts, and dry skin, may occur after microneedling, but not everyone will experience them. The healing process continues under the surface of your skin for up to two months. To minimize side effects, take care of your skin with moisturizers and gentle cleansers. Fortunately, the downtime after microneedling is relatively short compared to some other cosmetic procedures.

Microneedling Aftercare Tips

Microneedling is a fantastic treatment for achieving smoother, more youthful-looking skin. However, just like any treatment, aftercare plays a crucial role in maximizing your results and making sure you have a smooth recovery. Here are some of the essential “dos and don’ts” for microneedling aftercare.

Things to Avoid

  • Avoid harsh skincare products like exfoliants, retinol, or those with strong fragrances and chemicals.
  • Don’t put makeup on for at least 24-48 hours as it may cause further irritation, allergies, inflammation, and redness.
  •  It’s advisable to avoid pain relievers like ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil for a week as they thin the blood and potentially increase bleeding.
  • Do not ice your face or use arnica or bromelain.
  • Avoid any strenuous or intensive exercise that induces sweating.
  • Don’t take hot baths, showers, saunas, and spas for the first 24 hours after microneedling.
  • Avoid  cosmetic tattooing and any further clinical treatments  for at least a few weeks after microneedling such as microdermabrasion, laser, IPL, chemical peels and muscle stimulation
  • Resist the urge to touch or pick at the treated area. This can disrupt healing and increase infection risk.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours after your microneedling session as they can dehydrate your skin and hinder healing.
  • Limit direct sun exposure. If unavoidable, wear a hat and apply a high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin and keep it moisturized.

Things to Do

  • Only use skincare products recommended by your microneedling professional.
  • If prescribed by our nurse injector, apply a topical antibiotic cream to prevent infection.
  • Wash your hands properly before touching your face to minimize any irritation or discomfort.
  • Use lukewarm water and pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing.
  • Follow up with our cosmetic nurse 4-6 weeks after treatment to discuss results and any further recommendations.
  • Stay hydrated, and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Consider taking supplements like Omega-3, Zinc, and Vitamin C, as recommended by our nurse, to enhance the healing of your treatment.
  • Optionally, stick to dietary habits which include fresh pineapple, tart cherry juice (unsweetened), salmon (rich in omega-3), and collagen supplements (Collagen MD Advanced Connective Tissue Support Formula) for 2 weeks to support healing.
  • Avoid dairy, wheat, and sugar for best results.

Who Should Avoid Microneedling?

Microneedling isn’t for everyone. Here are some cases where it’s best to avoid:

  • Active skin infections or inflammatory conditions.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or blood disorders.
  • Hemophilia, blood clotting issues, or are on anticoagulants like aspirin, heparin, or warfarin.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • History of poor wound healing or keloid scarring.
  • Active acne or skin infections in the treatment area.
  • Used isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 6-12 months.
  • Undergone radiation therapy within the past year.
  • Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea (consult a dermatologist).
  • Open wounds, cuts, or sunburn in the treatment area.
  • History of skin cancer or currently undergoing cancer treatment.
  • Weakened immune system or on immunosuppressive medications.
  • Systemic infections such as Hepatitis or HIV.
  • Allergy to ingredients used in the treatment like topical anesthetic, stainless steel, hyaluronic acid, moisturizers, or sunscreen.

Microneedling Risks and Complications

Everyone’s skin is unique. The results of microneedling can vary depending on your specific skin type, condition, and how your skin reacts to the treatment.

Microneedling creates small holes in the skin, which could potentially allow germs to enter if a proper post-treatment care routine isn’t followed. However, the risk of infection is minimal, especially if you’re healthy and careful after the treatment. Also, keep in mind that microneedling may not always achieve the desired aesthetic outcome and it may take more than one procedure to get the results you want.
